Info
Address: Liljeholmstorget (in front of the outdoor parking lot for the shopping mall “Liljeholmstorget”), Liljeholmen, Stockholm.
The piece is created by Maskan who is part of the urban knitter duo Stickkontakt. The starting point for this piece, as well as for the other one just a hundred meters away from it, was a discussion around the issue of gender equality. Stickkontakt suggest that “compared to men, women are supposed to look nice and spend a considerable amount of time on making things look nice and decorative.” The irony here is that this is partly what Stickkontakt are also doing through urban knitting, and they note that they are aware of it.
Maskan chose a very feminine attribute. According to Stickkontakt, crocheted ties are loaded with humor. They say that this piece is a play on the traditional gender roles, which, for them, also define the norm for what goes on inside the Liljeholmstorget shopping mall right next to this piece. The fact that this shopping mall and the public square in front of it are newly constructed prompts Stickkontakt to conquering it; “to make it ours.”
